The Ballad of the Green Berets
Robin Moore and Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler

The United States Army Special Forces—or simply Special Forces (capitalized)—is a Special Operations Force of the United States Army trained for unconventional warfare and special operations. The force was founded in 1952 by Colonel Aaron Bank. Members of the Special Forces are also popularly known as "Green Berets" because of their distinctive green beret headgear. Their official motto is De Oppresso Liber (Latin: "To free from oppression"), a reference to one of their primary missions to train and assist foreign indigenous forces. (Wikipedia)

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Chorus:
Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live off natures land
Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage peak from the Green Berets

( Chorus) Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request
"Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret"

(Chorus) Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

The Stars and Stripes Forever
music and lyrics by John Philip Sousa

Let martial note in triumph float
And liberty extend its mighty hand
A flag appears 'mid thunderous cheers,
The banner of the Western land.
The emblem of the brave and true
Its folds protect no tyrant crew;
The red and white and starry blue
Is freedom's shield and hope.
Other nations may deem their flags the best
And cheer them with fervid elation
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation.

Hurrah for the flag of the free!
May it wave as our standard forever,
The gem of the land and the sea,
The banner of the right.
Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray
That by their might and by their right
It waves forever.

Let eagle shriek from lofty peak
The never-ending watchword of our land;
Let summer breeze waft through the trees
The echo of the chorus grand.
Sing out for liberty and light,
Sing out for freedom and the right.
Sing out for Union and its might,
O patriotic sons.

Other nations may deem their flags the best
And cheer them with fervid elation,
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation.

Hurrah for the flag of the free.
May it wave as our standard forever
The gem of the land and the sea,
The banner of the right.
Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with might endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray,
That by their might and by their right
It waves forever.

This Land Is Your Land :: Listen to Song
Written by Woody Guthrie

This land is your land,
This land is my land,
From California
To the New York Island,
From the redwood forest,
To the Gulf stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking,
That ribbon of highway,
I saw above me
That endless skyway,
I saw below me
That golden valley.
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled
And I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining
As I was strolling
The wheat fields waving
And the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin'
I saw a sign there
And that sign said no trespassin'
But on the other side
It didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city
In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office
I see my people
And some are grumblin'
And some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking
That freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

Patriotic Songs
America the Beautiful
Words by Katherine Lee Bates (1893/1904/1913)
Music by Samuel Ward (Materna 1882)

Verse 1: Oh Beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties, Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea!

Verse 2: O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat, Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

Verse 3: O beautiful for heroes proved, In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved, And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine!

Verse 4: O beautiful for patriot dream, That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea!

Verse 5: O beautiful for halcyon skies, For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties, Above the enameled plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
Till souls wax fair as earth and air, And music-hearted sea!

Verse 6: O beautiful for pilgrims feet, Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat, Across the wilderness!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
Till paths be wrought through wilds of thought, By pilgrim foot and knee!

Verse 7: O beautiful for glory-tale, Of liberating strife
When once and twice, for man's avail, Men lavished precious life!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
Till selfish gain no longer stain, The banner of the free!

Verse 8: O beautiful for patriot dream, That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
Till nobler men keep once again, Thy whiter jubilee!
